어렸을 때 부터 기차를 좋아했던 호퍼는 조세핀 호퍼와 결혼한 후 기차여행을 즐긴다

기차여행을 하면서 본 풍경을 호퍼는 이 그림에서

물결치는 듯한 녹색언덕과

석양빛을 배경으로 서 있는  철도길의 망루라는 외로운 풍경으로  재현했다

호퍼는 여행에서 돌아온후 그의 작업실에서 상상하며 그렸다고 한다
