200 Patients Per Day Keeps the Sadness Away

The little boy nervously looks up from his hands. “Is there anything wrong?” he asks in a faint voice.

He looks into the doctor’s bright eyes.

"Of course not! You’re completely fine!” the doctor replies. “In fact, you’re very healthy for your age! I just want you to eat more vegetables, okay?”

With a twinkle in his eye, the doctor laughs out loud. “Next time I see you in about 6 months,

I want to see how much you’ve grown! Eat up and you should shoot up like a beanstalk!” he says.

“Soon you’ll be looking down on me!”

Despite his outer shell of seriousness as a doctor, J cash, a pediatrician stationed at Incheon, always was

a dedicated, bright, and fun-loving individual at heart.

His arduous journey to become a pediatrician lasted for 40 years, starting in high school.

Growing up in a privileged family, Dr. J always focused on his studies and had many opportunities

to expand his knowledge of the subjects he loved, like science.

Because Dr.J always received good grades during high school, with the consent of his family,

he went off to Yeonsei Medical School to pursue the study of medicine. (Though Dr. J wanted to

become an artist, his father urged him to pursue the study of medicine because of the talents he possessed

relating to science and math.)

Although he often spent sleepless nights reviewing his notes and lectures in preparation for tests and quizzes, Dr. J always strived to achieve his goal. The work never seemed to end, but the soon-to-be doctor kept

his head up and memorized word after word.

After he finally graduated from medical school in 1973, Dr. J entered the military in the same year,

serving for a total of three years. He was stationed at the evacuation hospital, and controlled the amount of anesthesia soldiers received.

Throughout his service, Dr. J saw many injuries, some stomach-turning.

However, Dr. J always tried his best to help the patient, no matter what ailed them.

Even though Dr. J had fun with his friends during his service, there were many cases when he got lonely.

In 1974, he met his future wife who helped him return to his normal happy self.

In the year that followed, they had a daughter.

After Dr. J was honorably discharged from the military in 1976, he worked as an intern at the Shinchon

Severance Hospital for five years.

In total, Dr. J received 20 years of medical training before finally opening his own clinic in Incheon.

Once Dr. J’s clinic opened, it proved to be an instant success. For 20 years, Dr. J diagnosed more

than 200 patients per day, six days a week, from 8 am to 6 pm.

Even though treating so many patients could one day get tedious, Dr. J never tired of seeing new faces. Every new person was a new case, and Dr. J tried his best to diagnose the patient to the best of his

ability, and keep them laughing at the same time.

Because Dr. J loved to play around, he chose to be a pediatrician to work with children. Always making jokes and playing around with them, Dr. J always had fun while he worked.

Even after Dr. J retired in 2004, he continued to stay merry as a family member.

He would often engage in the game of “wallet picking” with his grandsons, who would attempt to steal

Dr. J’s wallet while he resisted.

Throughout his life, Dr. J has always been able to joke around and express his creativity through

different means. Hundreds of patients have returned to his clinic searching for Dr. J, only to realize that

he had retired.

“My only regret was not being able to tell everybody that I retired.

In a way that was the last joke I played on all of them!

They would return to the building, but find an empty space where my clinic was.

Just imagining their bewildered faces makes me sad... ! ”

Just recently Dr. J started painting again, and last September he displayed his artwork,

along with his colleagues , at gallery in Insa-dong, Seoul.

Though Dr. J is 65 years old, he continues to express his creativity through paintings and other

artistic means.

Dr. J displayed this painting at his art show in September. Titled, “Memory’s Stain”, this painting

represents both the painful and benign memories that individuals have of their past.
